Reasons Why Aluminium Has Become the Preferred Material for Beverage Packaging

It is really very crazy how much aluminium is almost everywhere these days. Like every single time I open the fridge to grab a cold seltzer or a beer, there are just aluminium cans everywhere. I remember back when glass was way more of a thing, the clinking sound in the grocery bag, worrying about dropping it on the driveway, but now it has completely changed to aluminium.

This metal has completely taken over the beverage world. And honestly, it makes total sense when you start breaking down the reason. It keeps things so damn cold, faster too. There is nothing like that crisp, freezing feel of a can right out of the cooler on a scorching July afternoon.

I was actually reading some stuff on this site the other day for a project I am trying to work on. I found this awesome Aluminium Packaging blog, which they write about sustainable, top-tier aluminium containers and help brands transition away from plastics, which is so needed, honestly. Anyway, while looking for inspiration on this packaging blog, I got sucked down the rabbit hole and wanted to know about how the beverage industry has shifted.

Why brands are making the switch

It is not just about them being lightweight, though that is huge for shipping costs and carbon footprints and whatever, but the preservation factor is insane.

  • Total barrier protection: Light and oxygen are like the ultimate enemies of flavour, especially for craft beers or those fancy infused waters. A can completely seal everything out. No light gets in. Zero.
  • Flavour integrity: The drink tastes exactly how the brewer intended, even months later.
  • Chilling efficiency: Metal conducts cold way faster than glass or plastic, saving energy at retail.

Wait, speaking of aluminium, I had this weird, random thought yesterday because I was cleaning up my desk with a magnet, and I suddenly thought, and a question came to my mind: Is aluminum magnetic? It turns out to be absolutely no; it is totally non-ferrous material. Random digression, sorry, but my brain just jumps around when I am typing fast. Anyway, let me come back to the beverage thing.

The sustainability factor

Another massive reason everyone is obsessed with it is the recycling aspect. Plastic is just depressing. We all know most of it ends up in a landfill or the ocean. But what about aluminium? It is infinitely recyclable. like, literally infinitely.

  • The 60-day loop: A can you throw in the bin today can be melted down and back on a store shelf as a brand-new can in like sixty days. That is absolutely wild to me.
  • Energy savings: It can actually save around 95% of the energy in comparison to making a brand-new aluminium from scratch.
  • Logistics win: Plus, they stack so perfectly. Saving space in the pantry, saving space in the trucks. It is just efficient.

Now I guess that is the main reason why major drink brands are switching over to aluminium now. Efficiency, freshness, infinite recycling, it just makes sense.
